Not all businesses belong on the web.
But most do. The world
wide web is a medium unsurpassed for advertising products and services
you offer,
soliciting employees, disseminating information to
your clients or the general public, and
opening up new markets, even international markets,
for your business.
So you have to ask yourself a few questions to really
answer this question:
- Do I have a product that can be sold easily without my customers having to hold, smell, or operate it?
- Am I selling the type of product or service that people are using the internet to search for?
- Can I save myself and my customers or clients time and money by making information available to them via the internet?
- Can I encourage my customers to use my website to get routine information about my business, thus saving employee time in answering those questions.
- Is my business the type that requires frequent communication with my customers that may be facilitated by the information on my website?
- Is my product of interest to people in other countries if I could just tell them about it?
- Could I increase my customer base by reaching a wider audience?
- Do I have an expertise I can share with customers prior to a purchase that gives them value?
- Do I have a unique product that isn't easy to find?
- And, am I willing to put in the time it takes to venture into the world wide web?
So what kind of commitment does it take?
You're involved from the start.
Your web site represents your company so you want
it to look and feel, well, like your business.
From the very beginning you will be involved in communicating your
business to your
web designer. This process normally entails providing copies of
brochures, pictures, policy
procedures, client lists and other information needed to build
your site. You may want to
outline how you think the site should be organized and submit that.
And we have forms to
collect much of the information we need to start your Design.
Updates are mandatory
Nothing will deter people returning
to your site more than if the information you provide has not been updated in six months or is of no use for
them. Things change, and your website should reflect your ability to stay abreast of the changes
in your particular business and supply your web visitors with the very latest information. This
responsibillity takes time to gather new information, supply it to your web master on a timely
basis, and monitor your web site's progress.
Promoting your site is critical
A lot of people think that all they need to do is get their site up and the
visitors will come. Nothing is farther from the truth. Just
having a site available doesn't mean
that visitors will find you. There are millions of s
ites available on the web. Promoting your site
on a regular basis is critical. We provide this
service but you can also do it yourself if you are
so inclined. But it must be done, so if
you choose to do it yourself make the commitment to
handle it on a regular basis.
The design of the
site itself is one of the important factors
in helping visitors find your particular site.
There is
an item called "meta tags" that are
critical to this endeavor. If your web
designer does not
include these meta tags properly even
if you are submitting your site to search engines on
a regular basis, the search engines
still cannot identify who you are or where you are.
Is it worth it?
Taking all of the above into consideration, most businesses are
helped by being on the web.
Some have done exceedingly well at increasing inquiries,
getting more opportunities to bid on
work, getting increased mail orders, and increasing
their visibility. The opportunities are there;
and if you are committed to this endeavor, we would love to help you.
